The pantry that feeds nearly 200 families closed down on Tuesday.
The school where the pantry has been located for the last several years is preparing for demolition. A new school is planned for the site.
One of the difficulties in finding a new pantry facility is securing enough space to store food and perishables. Tim King, Westport Town Administrator, said there were no town-owned locations that were suitable or available.
Patsy Travassos, who works at the Westport Food Pantry, said 20 new families signed up just this month, and another 15 families rely on its delivery services.
"We’re a non-profit organization that just wants to serve the people of Westport who have fallen on hard times," Travassos said. "And sometimes it’s the only groceries they ever receive a month."
She said the group is hoping to find a new space within the next 4 to 6 weeks. In the meantime, food pantries in Fall River and one in Dartmouth have opened their doors to Westport families in need.
