The Great Plains Mobile Food Pantry will deliver fresh vegetables, bakery items and boxed goods to three northeast North Dakota towns on Thursday, Nov. 7.
The mobile food pantry will be in Finley, Northwood and Emerado. The stop is one of more than 40 that the mobile food pantry expects to make this year in cities across North Dakota, said Jared Slinde, of the Great Plains Food Bank.
The food bank's Mobile Food Pantry and Perishable Food Distribution bring fresh food and produce to rural communities that struggle with access to food assistance. The programs combine to distribute more than 800,000 of food annually during stops across North Dakota and Clay County, Minn., according to the Great Plains Food Bank.
The kinds of fresh produce that will be on hand will depend on what is in the warehouse, Slinde said. This time of year that may be corn, potatoes, onions and squash, he said.
The food bank has continued to expand the amount of fresh produce it offers, he said. In 2018, Great Plains Food Bank distributed more than 4.3 million pounds of fresh produce, which was about 30 percent of the total food it made available to people in need.
“We’ve found it’s certainly popular among clients,” Slinde said.
The Great Plains Mobile Food Pantry will be available to anyone who needs food. People who use the pantry are asked to bring plastic bags or boxes to take food home food with them.
On Thursday, Nov. 7, the Great Plains Food Bank Mobile Food Pantry will be in Finley from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. east of Central Avenue, in Northwood from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the parking lot between the Northwood Community Center and City Hall, 12 N. Raymond St.; and from 2:30 to 3 p.m. in Emerado, at City Hall, 201 Main St.
