BATAVIA – Amanda Mistretta got an idea when she began seeing several "little libraries" popping up in communities around the area.

But instead of providing free books to the community, she wanted to offer nonperishable goods to those in need, right from her home.

After brainstorming with her husband, Anthony, and a quick trip to IKEA to purchase an outdoor shelving unit, the South Mallory Micro Pantry became a reality. On June 7, Mistretta, 32, and her family stocked the pantry, which is located in their front yard, and it officially opened.

Everyone is invited to take what they need, and can also make donations, Mistretta said.

Currently on the shelves are soup, pasta, macaroni and cheese, ramen, dog treats and diapers. There is also a shelf for snack items that children can enjoy on their walk home from school.

"I thought this would be a really nice outreach idea," she explained. "There has been a huge amount of support from the community. I posted on a few Facebook sites and tons of people loved the idea and wanted to donate, so we've had people stop by to add to it."

Mistretta said she likes the idea that it can be completely anonymous. She explained that no one has to ring her doorbell or ask permission to take any of the goods. So far, most of the items she stocked it with earlier in the month are still there.

"I want people to feel comfortable using it. People sometimes have a hard time asking for help, but this is just there. As people learn about this, I hope they use it," she said. "I don't think there's a huge need in Batavia, but more than people want to admit."

Mistretta plans to replenish the pantry "as needed," and said she may even expand it if the need is there.

"I hope we're doing a good thing. I feel like we are," she said. "I'd like to reach single parents who need things for their children. I want to be neighborly and want people to know that we can help each other. If you need something, stop by and check it out. And anyone can add to it, they don't need to check in with me."

The South Mallory Micro Food Pantry is located at 22 S. Mallory, Ave., Batavia.
