Local church opens food pantry - Journal Review

“Get a blessing, give a blessing,” reads the motto of the new Saint John the Barefoot food pantry.

Members of the Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church have been working hard to launch a new ministry, the purpose — providing food to those in need.

The inspiration for the pantry came from the patron saint of Holy Transfiguration, Saint John Maximovitch, also known as Saint John the Barefoot. His nickname came from his actions of walking the streets of Paris, and giving his shoes to the first barefooted beggar he encountered. The people of Saint John’s church would provide him with new shoes, which he would then turn and give away again.

Following in Saint John’s footsteps, the installment of the food pantry is purposefully to benefit those in need.

The pantry will be open 24/7, both to donations or pick ups. Keep in mind if donating, the church is looking for non-perishable food items.

The new pantry will be located at the entryway of the church, at 4636 Fall Creek Road.
