Discovery High student installs free food pantry in Newton - Hickory Daily Record

NEWTON— In the green space next to Abundant Life in Yount Park in Newton, a Little Free Pantry now stands, open to all.

The pantry was the last step in Fletcher Hamlin’s senior project at Discovery High School, which focused on food insecurity and lunchroom shaming. In addition to the pantry, Hamlin also held a food drive and donated around 200 pounds of food to Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry.

The pantry was built as a way of providing food for the local community for those with an immediate need, like on the weekends when the food pantries and soup kitchens are closed.

The community is welcome to contribute non-perishable food items to the pantry or take what they need from it at any time.
