Springfield, Mo. -- Here at the Salvation Army guests will now have more options to pick out the food they want.
People in need of food previously would get the same bag of food and now the new program gives volunteers and guests a better relationship to go pick out food together.
"We'll use corn as an example, they can get the whole kernel they can get cream corn and the soup, they can get the soup that they want instead of us giving them whatever is next," volunteer Carolyn Childress said.
"Before for many years, the food pantries established where everything was pre-packed the volunteers would come in, every family depending on their size would get the same amount of items, the same items were in there, and what we were finding is some folks didn't eat the same thing, and we were actually finding canned goods in bushes, or canned goods would come back to us, we would even find canned goods in our big red kettle over on the trailer, outside, because people didn't like it," Major Butch Frost, with the Salvation Army, said. "So they would just throw it in that kettle, so we've finally come to the decision that we either had to do something and make a change of some type and the best way to do that was to go to a choice pantry."
The pantry is open on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at 17
