Students at Shumate Middle School will be creating handmade pottery plates to help feed the hungry and support the Gibraltar Food Pantry.
Michelle Walchak’s seventh grade art students will make the pottery, which will then be used at an “empty plates’ event to raise money and awareness for the pantry.
According to Gibraltar Food Pantry Program Coordinator Carol Woggon, one in six children in the United States is touched by hunger related issues.

“Shumate Middle School is proud to be partnering with the Gibraltar Food Pantry in their ‘Empty Plates” event! This partnership allows us at Shumate to bring global issues, such as hunger to the forefront,” Walchak said. “Students want to help and this partnership allows our students the opportunity to be able to have hands-on involvement in the betterment of their local community.”
The event is set for May 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Muller/Richlin house, 31054 Bayview Drive in Gibraltar. Participants will be provided with hors d’oeuvres, a pig roast, sides, desserts and a selection of beer and wine while enjoying live entertainment as the sun sets over Gibraltar Bay. There will also be a 50/50 drawing, and bid on raffles.
Tickets to the event cost $50 per person or $90 for a pair, with all the proceeds going to the food pantry.
The pantry serves residents of Gibraltar, Brownstown Township and Rockwood. It has been open for 12 years. Last year more than 550 people benefitted from it.
“Our partnership Gleaner’s Community Food Bank of Sourtheastern Michigan allows us to purchase food for our clients at drastically reduced prices, thereby enabling us to purchase the most food possible for every dollar spent,” Woggon said.
