Escanaba's Salvation Army pantry is suffering a severe shortage - UpperMichigansSource.com

ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - After the generous time surrounding the holidays, charities often see a decline in donations they receive during the first few months of the year. Escanaba's Salvation Army is no exception.

The food pantry is running exceptionally low on all items at this time.

Officials say areas of particularly need are cereal, canned vegetables, prepared dinners like macaroni and cheese and instant potatoes.

They also accept donations of toiletries and personal hygiene products.

Salvation army officials say they've seen an increase of 50% in the amount of families seeking services compared to this time last year.

But the Army's Major Ralph Hansen has faith in the community.

"Whenever the need comes up, whenever our food pantry runs low this community seems to rally," said Hansen. "I think it's because they care about their neighbors and want to make sure that those who aren't able to make it can make it. It's just a caring generous community and we're thankful for that."

Those needing food services or wishing to make a donation should stop by the Salvation Army in Escanaba during regular business hours.

Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation can send it to: P.O. Box 424, Escanaba, MI, 49829.
