DEFOREST, Wis. (AP) — Girl Scouts in southern Wisconsin are stocking the shelves of a small food pantry they created.
A seven-member Girl Scouts troop largely funded the installation of the Little Free Pantry box outside Christ Lutheran Church in DeForest, the Wisconsin State Journal reported . The wooden box is a place where community members can pick up free nonperishable food and other necessities.
“We just thought it would be a great addition to our community,” said troop leader Jenny Casper.
Her husband, Mike Casper, built and installed the pantry at the church. The box, which is 2 feet long by 2 feet tall by 1 foot deep, features four shelving areas of various heights.

One scout will be assigned to the box each month, Casper said. The scout will be responsible for checking the pantry to see if it needs refilling or if items have expired.
Mary Lyons, a scout and seventh grader at DeForest Area Middle School, said the troop presented the idea to the church earlier this year.
“We gave them the whole spiel about why this is good and why it should be here,” Lyons said.
Casper said she hopes other youth groups and community members will contribute to the project.
The first Little Free Pantry box was created in Arkansas in May 2016. Casper heard of the idea through Facebook and brought the idea to the troop as a potential service learning project.
