The Sutherlin-Oakland Food Pantry got a boost when it was awarded a grant recently from the Oregon Community Foundation to help feed the hungry.
Officials from the food pantry said they received a grant of $5,000 from the Olsrud Family Fund, which is from Sherman and Wanda Olsrud of Sherm's Thunderbird Market Corp. in Medford.
The money will go to fill food boxes for needy families in the communities of Oakland, Sutherlin, Umpqua and Wilbur.
"The grant is very important to the pantry," said LaVern Suhar Brown. "We rely entirely on grant donations from civic clubs, churches, our two yearly fundraisers and other giving people in the community."
The Sutherlin-Oakland Food Pantry is open from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday at 183 First Ave., Sutherlin.
