HAMMOND -- When 12-year-old Piper Phalen of Hammond invited friends to her recent birthday party, she explained her birthday wish was to do something to help others in the community less fortunate than she.

She asked that rather than bringing gifts for her, they bring items to give to the

Hammond Food Pantry.

Piper's friends honored her wish. As a result, she collected and presented pantry Director Joan Hadlock with three large boxes of food donations.

Receiving those items was timely, as they became part of Christmas boxes that were given out this past week to area families in need.

“The food pantry is very appreciative of Piper's commitment to the community,” a news release says.

The Hammond Food Pantry serves families in Hammond, Brier Hill, Morristown, Macomb, Rossie and the surrounding areas.

The monthly food distribution for income eligible families takes place at the Hammond Fire Hall, usually on the fourth Thursday morning from 9:30 to 11:00 am.

Pickup of the FoodSense program orders is scheduled immediately following the Food

Pantry distribution and items must be picked up by noon.

There are no income guidelines for the FoodSense program.

Food items must be ordered and paid for ahead of time.

Food stamps may be used to pay for the orders.
