A thought just occurred to me. We all have a storage space in our kitchen called a “pantry.” Yet none of us store pans in there. The pantry contains snacks, spices, pasta, a whole bunch of foodstuff that is not pans. What gives?
Wikipedia had to remind me that the rood of pantry is “panis,” which means bread. (My Latin teacher must be rolling over in her grave since I forgot). But wait a second. You don’t keep bread in your pantry either–that’s what the breadbox is for!
So, I don’t know. I’m very confused. Turns out “pan” doesn’t even come from the same root. Language is confusing. (Maybe I need to see “Arrival” a few more times). The only good outcome of this whole cat-and-mouse chase that I just embarked on with regard to these words is that I found out that pans are on sale today at Amazon. Not a bad consolation prize.
I’ll tell you one thing. Even though I’ll probably get some of these pans (since the prices are so good), I definitely will NOT be putting them in my pantry.
