Growing up, we didn’t always have a lot of money. Yet I don’t recall ever worrying about whether or not I would get something to eat. Not only did my brothers and I not worry about food, my brothers were always bringing their friends home–and my mother fed them as well. My mother always kept extra in the pantry just in case.
There are children and adults in Coweta County who are in need of food… and I am proud to live in a community that works hard to feed those among us who are hungry. Central Baptist Church Newnan has a program called “Feeding Our Friends” that provides food to those who are not able to do it themselves.
Backpack Buddies packs food for children to take home over the weekend just to make sure that they get something to eat before they come back to school on Monday. Backpack Buddies is in every elementary school in Coweta County, and provides close to 1,000 meals a week for 450 children in our county.
Meals on Wheels delivers 100 meals a day to the elderly homebound Cowetans so that they may remain in their own homes as long as possible. Meals on Wheels estimates that there are currently 300 elderly adults in Coweta County who are unable to get their own meals either due to illness or financial hardship.
Bridging the Gap Ministries provides food to families, in addition to a variety of different ministries. Last year, I volunteered at Bridging the Gap. I went early on a Saturday morning with my Crock Pot of homemade vegetable soup, feeling like I was going to be a blessing to others. I cried all the way home because I was the one who received the blessing.
I am grateful for these ministries and the many others that exist in Coweta County, but I want to do more… hopefully I am not alone. Please join me in participating in the 33rd Annual Newnan Junior Service League Can-A-Thon on November 29, 2016. On that day, there will be drop-off points on the Courthouse Square and at Morgan’s Jewelry at Thomas Crossroads from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Food and money donations will be accepted. Listen to 92.5 The Bear to hear the progress of the donations throughout the day. Last year, the NJSL Can-A-Thon received enough donations to stock the Coweta Community Food Pantry for 10 months.
Please help take care of those among us who are hungry. Support one of the many ministries in our community. Check what is in your pantry, and see if there is something that you could donate. I believe that you will feel blessed when you do.
