Donations from the Trucchi's "Stuff the Truck" event in Abington on Nov. 12 and 13 totaled more than 4,000 pounds of food, paper goods, and toiletries for the local food pantry.

ABINGTON -- He lives in a small town, but food pantry director Brian Sullivan was reminded this weekend that Abington is full of big hearts.

Sullivan and the Abington Food Pantry partnered with Trucchi’s Supermarkets on Saturday and Sunday for the first-ever "Stuff the Truck" event in Abington.

Their mission was to fill a truck with donations of food, toiletries, and paper products.

Sullivan called the weekend “a success.”

Collecting more than 4,000 pounds of donations from several thousand people, “Stuff the Truck” became the second-largest food drive the pantry has had in more than a year.

“It’s unbelievable how generous this town has been,” Sullivan said. “One person might only have something small, but it all adds up. All of it helps.”

He was originally approached several months ago by Anne Trucchi, whose family owns the local supermarket chain, and Abington store manager Ken Coyle.

The Abington store wanted to host and promote a drive for the food pantry in their parking lot.

“I was very thrilled,” Sullivan said.

On Saturday, volunteers from the UCC in Abington helped spread the word to Trucchi's shoppers about donating, and helped Sullivan organize donations.

On Sunday, members of the Abington Lion's Club did the same.

They received turkeys, Trucchi's gift cards, canned goods, packaged food, diapers, juice, baking supplies, and paper products.

Sullivan has been director of the food pantry for about five years, and has volunteered there for more than 12.

The food pantry serves almost 500 families in Abington, Sullivan said, and community partners make this much easier.

“Trucchi’s and their shoppers, over the years, have been outstanding,” he said.

The Trucchi’s Middleboro location also held a “Stuff the Truck” drive this weekend, for the Sacred Heart Food Pantry.

Next weekend, locations in New Bedford, West Bridgewater, and Taunton will hold “Stuff the Bus” events.
