Abington PD helps local food pantry even in charity off-season - Enterprise News

The local police department has been collecting food and toiletries donations this month for the Abington Food Pantry.

ABINGTON -- The winter holidays often bring out generosity, and as a result, are a popular time for donations to local food pantries. But what about the rest of the year?

The Abington Police Department is working to make sure their local food pantry is stocked, even during the "charity off-season."

Helping less fortunate community members is “important throughout the year,” said Chief David Majenski.

His department is wrapping up their second food pantry donation drive of 2016, Majenski said.

Their first was over the summer, and Majenski said he purposely chose times of year other community organizations might not think of collecting donations.

The Abington department has featured a shopping cart for donations in the building lobby all month. Through Oct. 31, they're collecting cans of soup, packaged snacks, other non-perishable items, and toiletries.

“We’re just a conduit for the food pantry," Majenski said, "because we’re open 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

Requesting donations be dropped off in the lobby has the added advantage of “helping people feel comfortable coming into the police station,” Majenski said.

He said community members have been “very generous so far,” and he asked for a final push before Nov. 1, when officers will deliver the donations to the food pantry.
