The Peace Pantry needs volunteers this weekend - Leader Publications

The big weekend is here and the Peace Pantry in Cedar Hill needs volunteers to set up shelves and move food, clothing and furniture to its new location at 8100 South Industrial Drive.

“The area we need the most help with is washing and setting up shelves that we bought from Queens grocery store. We need to get these cleaned and set in place so the food can be put directly on the shelves,” board president Linda Schroeder wrote in a letter requesting volunteers.

Crews will begin moving at 5 p.m. this evening (Friday, Sept. 9). Volunteers can report to the new location or at the former location at 6672 Veterans Drive about one mile north of the new Peace Pantry. Volunteers will be working until about 9 p.m.

On Saturday, volunteers will work from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at both locations.

On Sunday, the plan is to meet and work at the new location at 8 a.m. and work until 5 p.m.

“We are hoping by Saturday evening, we will have everything out of the old pantry,” Schroeder wrote.

The pantry will provide food and drink for volunteers, she said.

Volunteers are asked to bring “handyman” tools, if they have them.

The Jefferson Memorial Community Foundation awarded a $350,000 grant in December 2015 to build the new pantry. The foundation was established with $154 million in assets from the sale of Jefferson Regional Medical Center to Mercy and uses the income from those assets to fund health care programs run by nonprofits in Jefferson County.

The Peace Pantry is required to be out of its current location by Sept. 15 and clients will have to be served from the new pantry on Sept. 14.
