LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — With Thanksgiving right around the corner, organizations across the Commonwealth are working to make sure no one goes hungry during the holiday.
About 350 people gathered at God's Pantry Food Bank in Lexington on Saturday for the annual Basket Brigade.
The event is fast-paced, as participants packed as many boxes as they could over the course of several two-hour shifts.
Team members filled the boxes with non-perishable items that will be delivered to about 5,500 local families in need.
“So imagine 5,500 families that don't have a Thanksgiving meal. Because of our ‘Sharing Thanksgiving’ program, now they do," said God’s Pantry Food Bank CEO Michael Halligan. "It's just a wonderful way to spread the joy and the hope that comes with a Thanksgiving meal."
The baskets will be distributed the week of Thanksgiving, along with a turkey and other perishable items.
