AUSTIN — Ruby's Pantry, a national pop-up food pantry, will make its first visit to Austin this month.
Grace Lutheran Church, 2001 6th Ave. SE in Austin, will host the pantry starting with registration at 4 p.m. Sept. 19, and distribution running from 5 p.m. to about 6:30 p.m. The pantry is scheduled to return the third Thursday of every month.
People wanting a share of food should bring containers — either two boxes or tote bags — and a $20 cash donation (no checks or credit cards) that will cover the costs of warehousing and transporting the food to the location.
There are no income or residency requirements, and a share of food provides 18 to 20 items including at least one meat, one dairy and one bread item. All food is donated to Ruby's Pantry by national and regional corporations. Shares can be used by the individual shareholders or donated.
A percentage of each share stays with the local Ruby’s Pantry to be used for benevolence giving to needy people in the local pantry’s area. More than 80 volunteers have worked to bring Ruby's Pantry to Austin.
