Harvest Hoedown raises money for the homeless and local food pantry

RHINELANDER - A local fundraiser got people in the fall spirit today.

Kids in Rhinelander rode wagons and painted pumpkins to help the less fortunate.

The Woodpecker Bar and Grill was filled with hundreds of families eating, playing games, and listening to live music.

They celebrated the fourth year of the Harvest Hoedown.

Funds raised at the event went towards the Rhinelander area food pantry and the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing to support the homeless.

Administrative assistant Tammy Dye sees the importance of having events like this in the Northwoods.

"It makes Rhinelander something special because it's like you can bring your families out, enjoy it, but it also raises awareness for those that are hungry, those that are homeless in the area…And yeah up here in Northern Wisconsin it doesn't look like it does in the big cities for people to be homeless or hungry, but its here," said Dye.

Pulled pork, brats, and caramel apples were among some of the fall treats for sale.

Food pantry director Guy Hansen believes this event has something of interest for everyone.

"This is one that's totally family oriented. We have lots and lots of kids and families that come. It's inexpensive. You can come here and spend as much as you want on food, or the wagon rides, or the craft items, or the raffle or whatever, but you don't have to," said Hansen.

The biggest money maker was a raffle for a football signed by the entire Packers team.

Organizers say the event grows bigger every year and they can't wait to see the crowd next year.
