CANTON, Mo. – Students at Culver-Stockton College worked to bridge the hunger gap in the Lewis County Sunday.

The Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity hosted its second annual Watermelon Bust.

The event raises money and nonperishable food items for the Lewis County food pantry.

Activities included watermelon eating contest and watermelon rolling races, all to support a cause that the food pantry director said makes a huge difference to nearly 250 area families.

“We have families with very young children that come in in tears because they’ve never been in a situation where they needed help before,” Lewis County Food Pantry Board director Mandy Gosik said. “We have seniors that have been really honest that they are making a decision between food and prescriptions and nobody should ever have to make those decisions.”

She said they’re always in need of volunteers at the pantry.

Distribution days are the second Wednesday of every month.
