Humane Society may be forced to cancel pet pantry - Alabama's News Leader

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society may have to cancel its pet pantry program.

GBHS tells ABC 33/40 News low donation numbers could lead to the closure, and they are asking for help. Thursday, the pet pantry only had three bags of dry dog food.

"We're in desperate need. Most of the time we have 15 to 20 families we feed per month who may have multiple, large dogs. We need the help of the Birmingham community," GBHS spokesperson Lindsey Mays explained.

The pantry is asking for donations before 10 a.m. Saturday, when families will pick up their monthly rations. GBHS is asking for 20-50 lb bags of new, unused dog food and they are open from 11 a.m.. to 5 p.m.. Friday at 300 Snow Drive.

"We all go through struggles in our lives. We allow them this opportunity to keep their pet and get back on their feet," Mays added.

Bags of dog food may also be purchased for GBHS through their Amazon Wish List, or by making a donation on the human society's website. Earmark the donation "pet pantry".
