Response to Nov. 4 article on San Benito Food Pantry eviction - Valley morning Star

A brief timeline leading to decision for eviction. I’m limited to detail due to space. 6/20/18: Roof repairs done over the years to pantry area. Due to limited renters and limited monies, could not do additional repairs.

Verbally advised Ms. Walker to start looking for a new home for Pantry. 7/2018: Mothballs used by Pantry exterminator to rid them of rodents.

Extermination done monthly as per Ms. Walker.

This rodent issue happened often over the years. Previous renter would help pantry keep rodents under control.

08/2–31/18: Mothballs cause strong smell throughout building, breathing issues, complaints by customers.

Rats (not mice) dying in hallway, attic area, rooms in building. Inventory/equipment damaged by rats.

Poison bait used by Pantry exterminator in Pantry and all around building.

Had been advised in the past not to use poison bait.

Custodian/Renters removing rats from hallways, attic area with severe smells everywhere.

Advised Health Dept. of issues. Options provided.

9/4–18/18: Eviction notice sent to Pantry. Ms. Walker refuses to leave. Said to take her to court.

Ms. Walker and other people stated people would go hungry because of me.

10/3–11/6/18: Took Pantry to court. Notified on 10/3 to leave by 11/3. Refused to leave. Article appears on 11/4.

Saw judge on 11/5 to discuss issue. Saw damage left by Pantry.

Water left running, toilet broken, A/C units left on at 65 & 70 degrees so not shutting off.

Food left on the floor, exposed bread left in bin in back area and rat droppings all around. Poison bait left around back area.

Droppings only found on pantry area no other area in buildings. Received keys on 11/6 after judge spoke to both parties on 11/5.

I was accused of leaving people hungry by evicting the pantry. The Renters were affected so we waived the rent as they could not conduct business.

You do the best you can. Eviction was the only choice.

Sincerely,

Elia Castillo Weslaco
