EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) - Despite the cold weather, hundreds laced up their sneakers to run in the seventh annual Stuffing the Pantry Road Race in East Longmeadow.

The race began Thursday morning on Chestnut Street. Proceeds from the race benefited the Open Pantry in Springfield.

Non-perishable food was collected by runners and people supporting the runners.

Executive Director of the Open Pantry Terry Maxey told 22News the pantry is on track to give out 1 million pounds of food this year.

"When we have events like this, it gives the community an opportunity to come out and the feeling is great," Terry Maxey Open Pantry executive director told 22News.

"I just can't resist an opportunity to support the community," said Elaine Gerneux of Hampden. "I come out here every year, it's what we do. And I stuck a turkey on my head today just for fun."

The event has raised more than $124,000 and collected nearly five tons of food for the Open Pantry over the last five years.
