Vernon may be a small community, but it has the same problems that bigger towns and cities have. One of those problems is people that don't have enough to eat.
A few years ago, in 2012, this problem was recognized and a food pantry was formed. Today, the Vernon Food Pantry is helping about 60 local families stretch their food budget and "make ends meet" each month.
The food given out is purchased for only 12 cents a pound from United Food Bank with money donated locally, and could not be distributed without these cash donations. Rent and liability insurance also has to be paid and the insurance premium for the Vernon Food Pantry recently more than doubled in price.
The folks at the pantry usually hold one or more fundraisers each year to keep the money flowing. In August, "Schwan's Cares" is the fundraising choice that was made. Volunteers thought that since people already buy Schwans frozen foods, they could buy the food they usually buy and also help out their neighbors. Schwan's donates 20-40 percent of the purchase price to the pantry. Anyone anywhere can participate. This fundraiser will continue for a few more weeks, with the goal being to raise $500. So far, 15 percent of the goal has been made.
If you would like to help the Vernon Food Pantry out with this fundraiser, simply go to www.schwans-cares.com. Click on "find a campaign," then type in the name of the campaign "Food For Our Neighbors" or ID# 41132. Next, click on our picture and shop. The Vernon Food Pantry will get a percentage of your purchase price. You will be getting quality food for your own family and will be helping needy families as well. Every dollar is greatly appreciated.
