Big Creek Cowboy Church in San Jacinto County has opened a food pantry help local residents in need. Over the last three weeks, church members hustled to be ready for the grand opening on Feb. 17.

"We wanted to reach out to the community because we had seen the need," said Tammy Runnels of Big Creek Cowboy Church.

The congregation worked with Covenant with Christ, of Cleveland, Texas, to set up the food pantry.

"They're getting groceries, not just produce," said Christine Shippey of Covenant with Christ.

The doors opened on Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. Dozens of local citizens lined up to pick up food for their families.

"There's a very big need in San Jacinto County," said Shippey. "They're a very underserved county."

Big Creek Cowboy Church has also received plenty of donations, including freezers to store meet and other frozen products. The church prepared for at least 100 people on Feb. 17.

"We're hoping for a bigger turnout next month," said Runnels.

Runnels says she hopes the local citizens can come to see this as a tool of assistance in the future.

Big Creek Cowboy Church is opening its doors from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month for its food pantry.
