Food Pantry opens at Southern Aroostook - The County

Residents in need from southern Aroostook County now have another option to pick up free food supplies.

DYER BROOK, Maine — Residents in need from southern Aroostook County now have another option to pick up free food supplies.

Thanks to a grant from the Good Shepard Food Bank, a small food pantry has been created at Southern Aroostook Community School to help students who may be battling hunger issues at home, as well as to aid other members of the general public.

According to Lauren Calbi, an education technician with the Region Two forestry program at SACS, the pantry will be located inside the high school and feature non-perishable goods.

“The program helps alleviate child hunger through providing food to children and their families,” Calbi said. “The pantry is free and open to the public. It is not an income-based program. Anyone is welcome.”

A similar food pantry was set up by the Skills USA team at the Region Two Career and Technical Education center in Houlton in February 2017.

The pantry will be stocked every third Thursday of the month and comes with a variety of  produce and dry goods. Food items in the pantry include but are not limited to pasta, sauce, pizza kits, peanut butter, cookies, assorted canned veggies, assorted canned fruit, cereal, and some snacks like crackers and cookies.

On delivery days, the public may come to the bus garage/forestry wing located near the superintendent’s office.
