Volunteers at the Prodisee Pantry in Baldwin County are gearing up for a big day distributing food to those in need tomorrow. The pantry has been slowly expanding over the last decade. The food warehouse was buzzing with activity as volunteers sorted foods.
Jessica Sturgis, volunteer: “A way to give back and feel like you’re doing something for people, it’s just nice to be needed,” said volunteer Jessica Sturgis as she described the importance of being part of the effort. A group of Girl Scouts joins this team of volunteers to get the stuff sorted.
“It’s great, we all work together, we’re proactive and we get it done faster,” said Daphne Girl Scout Nicole Nager with enthusiasm. Organizers say they’ve only seen the need grow in the 14 years since the Prodisee Pantry’s been around.
“When we opened 14 years ago for our Thanksgiving distribution we serviced 25 families we’ve now grown to over 500 families each week of November during the holidays and that number will grow in December as well,” said Prodisee Pantry Executive Director Deann Servos. Organizers say the pantry is open to anyone in need this holiday.
“I see a lot of seniors come in, seniors that are in wheelchairs, walkers and that’s the greatest help, getting them through month to month,” said volunteer Faye Trawick in the middle of sorting food. Gates open at 8 am Tuesday morning at their location on Spanish Fort Boulevard. The food distribution starts at 9 am. The pantry is still looking for volunteers and donations year-round.
