The Southeast Ohio Foodbank, a program of Hocking Athens Perry Community Action (HAPCAP), has begun holding a series of 10 mobile food distributions in Washington County.
Made possible by a $5,000 donation from AEP Ohio, fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable food items will be distributed to low-income families in Washington County.
Each two-hour distribution will provide approximately 10,000 pounds of food to hungry families.
Washington County has the second highest number of food insecure people in the Foodbank’s ten-county service area making it the focus of this grant.
According to Map the Meal Gap, there are 8,800 food insecure people in Washington County, including nearly 3,000 children.
“Through our mobile pantry, we are able to reach more families struggling with hunger that might otherwise have limited access due to geographic and transportation barriers,” said Asti Payne, Development & Community Relations Coordinator, HAPCAP. “We are thankful for AEP Ohio’s support which will allow us to bring fresh produce and other nutritious food items to Washington County where one in every seven residents struggle with hunger.”
The first of these distributions was held on October 18th from 11:00AM to 1:00PM at the Washington County Fairgrounds.
The next set of distributions will be in November.
Income-eligible residents must bring a photo I.D. and proof of residency to receive food.
