BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – One out of four kids in the Mahoning Valley doesn’t know if there will be food on the table when he or she gets home from school.

Now, there’s a new plan in Boardman to make sure kids don’t go hungry at home.

Second Harvest Food Bank and the Boardman Lions Club are teaming up with Boardman Center Intermediate School to give hungry kids a new option.

Tuesday, they launched a new food pantry inside the school. Kids will be able to pick up what they need and bring it home with them.

Organizers say it’s a first of its kind effort, and they think it’ll change lives.

“If they’re sitting around worrying about where their next meal is going to be, or if they’re even going to eat until they get back her to school, that affects their concentration and everything,” Boardman Intermediate Principal Randy Ebie.

The pantry is already open for students, with about 3,000 food items available. Kids can pick up what they need on their way out of school to their buses.

If you’re interested in supporting the project financially, you can donate to Second Harvest Food Bank and designate your donation for the Boardman Intermediate School Pantry.
