A St. Joseph woman is working to prove that small things can make a big difference.
Vanessa Steinman is opening up a little free pantry outside her home on 24th St. and Edmond St.
"Sometimes people need to use the food pantry, Second Harvest, and it's not open. They may get off work and they have no food for their children. Well, they can come by the pantry. It's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and check something out of there," Steinman said.
Steinman said the little free pantry is modeled off little free libraries. When she first saw a little free pantry on Facebook, she knew it was something she wanted to bring to St. Joseph.
"I thought that is a great idea. St. Joseph needs a free little pantry," Steiman said.
She contacted her friend Chris Hecker to help her build the pantry.j
"She likes to help the community and she likes to help kids," Hecker said.
He donated the wood and built the structure. He said it took a few hours to build. He said he hopes people in the community help Steinman in her effort to give back.
"Any little bit can help people in the neighborhood," Hecker said.
The little library is located at 2402 Edmond St. People can stop by any time to make a donation or pick up food for the family.
The official, grand opening of the pantry is Saturday from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
