The Amen House in Georgetown feeds close to a 100 families a week.
"We got to eat everyday not just Thanksgiving," said Michelle Adams, a volunteer at the food pantry.
The Amen House is the only food pantry in the city able to feed families on a regular basis.
"Volunteering here a couple of days and you really see you know the nuts and bolts of what comes in and what goes out. And the need in the community. Our need base goes to seniors on a low income and single mothers with children," said Adams.
Nicole Bordeau is one of those single mothers. She aged out of the foster care system nearly four years ago. Two children later and she is grateful to have The Amen House as a resource.
"Our told them I have nothing, nothing at all. They were like here we'll help you. They gave me just a cart full of food. I mean it was way more than that..it was a cart full of food. They knew I needed help," said Bordeau.
Nicole represents one of more than 300 families the Amen House will feed this month. Right now is a critical time for the pantry. Food shelves are emptier than normal and the volunteers are asking for help.
"Typically our September and October seasons we are short on food and we have an increase in families that need food. We hope to get a lot of holiday donations, but right now our shelves are very bare and we've been extremely busy for the season," said Adams.
There are food barrels at the Georgetown Kroger designated for the Amen House. You can also drop off food donations to the Amen House on East Main Street in Georgetown. They accept donations Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to Noon, and until 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
