Dayton food pantry in clean-up mode following crash - WDTN

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A food pantry is in clean-up mode after a car crashes into the building, damaging much of the food supply.

Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley got an unfortunate surprise last night when a car skidded off the road, slamming into a window in the basement of their building.

It just so happened to be same room where their main food supply is stored.

Glass from the broken window cost them most of their bread supply and canned goods.

A refrigerator-freezer was also damaged, causing them to toss much of their dairy products as well.

The driver is expected to be okay after being taken to a nearby hospital.

The pantry closed this morning– when they normally would have served about 100 familes.

CEO Laura Roesch is glad to see nearby pantries reached out to help.

“We’ve already recieved calls for how can we help you. Our neighbors right next door to the house of bread have been wonderful supporters during this unexpected time. Our network of hunger providers are going to step up as well to make sure needs continue to be met,” she said.

The insurance company is expected to cover the repair costs.

They expect to re-open Monday morning at 9:30 a.m.
