Historical Society meets Tuesday
The Boonsboro Historical Society will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 64 S. Main St.
Curtis Older will be the featured speaker. He is a descendant of the Fox family for whom Fox's Gap on the battlefield of South Mountain is named.
He is the author of two books, "The Braddock Expedition and Fox's Gap in Maryland," and "The Land Tracts of the Battlefield of South Mountain."
The subject of his presentation will be "The Roads through Fox's, Turner's, and Crampton's Gap."
The program is open to the public.
Library news
The following programs are planned at the Boonsboro Library:
• A home-school STEM design challenge takes place today at the library from 1 to 2 p.m. Home-schooled students ages 6 to 12 will gather to build a boat. The group learning activity includes lessons about buoyancy and density. Participants will design a boat to float in the pond behind the library. Registration is required by calling the library at 301-432-5723.
• Also Tuesday at the library, the Afternoon Book Club meets at 3 p.m. to discuss "All American Boys" by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely.
The book is the One Book, One Maryland selection for this year.
Chicken barbecue
The Boonsboro Lions Club will hold its last chicken barbecue of the season Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
It costs $7 for a half chicken and $8.50 for a meal.
The Lions will set up in the lot next to Columbia Bank on Main Street.
Yard sale to help needy families
Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Rohrersville will hold its annual yard sale benefiting the needy families fund on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the friendship hall.
Sandwiches, soups and baked goods will be available for purchase.
Yard sale items including furniture, children’s clothing, toys and other goods will be available for free or by donation.
The site is just off the intersection of Md. 67 and Locust Grove Road.
There is plenty of parking and the building is handicapped-accessible
Dinner dance planned
The Nifty Fifties annual dinner dance will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Boonsboro American Legion.
Graduates of Boonsboro High School in the years of 1950 to 1959 are invited to attend.

Benevola United Methodist Church will hold a craft bazaar and bake sale, along with its community breakfast, on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 7 a.m. to noon.
Table spaces are available to rent for $10 each.

Pet blessing planned
Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 64 S. Main St., will hold a pet blessing Saturday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the parking lot.
A pet blessing works very much like an open house — attendees are invited to come when is convenient for them.

Class of 1966
The BHS Class of 1966 will hold its 50th class reunion Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Boonsboro American Legion.
All classmates who attend will receive a free memory book, which includes pictures of picnics, past reunions and the 50th. I

Farmers market open Tuesday
The farmers market in Shafer Park will be open Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. I’ll be dropping by Waltz Farms to pick up some things for a cooking class I teach. Hope to see you there.
And speaking of the cooling class, there are two spots left. The session runs each Tuesday in October and will feature soups your mother never made.
It costs $75 for all four classes and includes most of the ingredients to make the dish at home.
