CHICAGO — The Lakeview Pantry is now giving people in need a way to order their free groceries online.
The pantry opened its new warehouse, dubbed the Hub, this weekend at 5151 N. Ravenswood Ave.
People struggling with food insecurity can pick up free groceries at the Hub, and new services means they can also order those groceries online with a computer or phone for the first time.
The online ordering system is the first of it kind for a pantry in Chicago, according to the Lakeview Pantry. The size of the Hub will also allow the organization to store more food and help more people.
It “represents the next generation of hunger relief for hardworking people who can’t always wait in line for food in a traditional pantry setting,” according to the organization.
The pantry gives out more than 1.7 million pounds of food to about 9,000 households every year. Many of the people who use its services are employed but have low wages.
The Hub is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and pickup for online orders is 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursdays.
Orders can be placed online. Every household can get one distribution per month. Eligibility information is also available online.
