Mobile food pantry offers non-perishables in under served areas - WGEM

After operating a food pantry for several years, a local Quincy church is now offering a new way to help those in the community.

Lutheran Church of St. John now has a mobile food pantry.

The van was purchased through a grant to help start up the new ministry.

Once a month the mobile food pantry stops in either Bowen, Liberty, Mendon and Rushville. Along with one of three locations in Quincy; including Frederick Ball, Indian Hills and Lampe Hi-Rise.

Organizers say the van allows those to pick up food who may not have the ability to get to a food pantry.

“We bring the food out and we set the food out on tables,” said Pastor Steve Hayden with the Lutheran Church of St. John. “They’ll go to a vegetable section, for example, and they’ll get to pick out two or three cans of vegetables they would like. They walk away with what their family is going to eat and what they need.”

The next mobile food pantry delivery will be at Indian Hills Community Center on August 27.

If you have a need for food, you’re asked to call the Lutheran Church of St. John or stop by Indian Hills to sign up.
