One of the values at the center of being a Boy Scout is to help others.

The Watertown Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts lived out that promise in service to the Watertown Food Pantry in November.

“The highlight is the generosity of people, whether people would give a whole bag of groceries or people would just give one item, it was a constant flow of food coming out as people were walking through,” said Chris Desrochers, committee chair of Troop 30. “Its very nice to see people giving like that and it's great for the kids to see it too.”

The Watertown Boy Scout Troop 30 and Cub Scout Troop 30 donated over 100 bags of groceries to the Watertown Food Pantry on Nov. 18.

The collection is an annual tradition for the organization. The scouts were at the Watertown Stop & Shop located at 171 Watertown St. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Boy Scout Troop 30 has roughly 14 boys ranging in age from 12-17 and the Cub Scout Troop 30 has over 30 scouts who range from kindergarten to fifth grade.

As a national organization, the Boy Scouts donate food in a program called Scouting for Food where scouts collect food items to help their local community in cities across the country.

The Watertown scouts plan to continue the donation process this spring. Donations for the food pantry are needed year-round, Desrochers says.

“We’re not asking for anything for ourselves; we’re asking for stuff for people in our community that need help so it's a good thing for them to see and be part of it's a good lesson for them to learn,” he said.
