Bertie’s Spooktacular has two new additions this year, a 1-Mile Color Fun Run/Walk and Trunk or Treat. Following the Spooktacular 5K on Oct. 26, there will be a 1-mile Color Fun Run/Walk to celebrate 10 years of the event.
To participate in the color portion, participants will run or walk up to the tables set up on one side of the road. Volunteers will squirt color from the neck down. People should pass by the tables to opt out of the color. There will be water and paper towels to clean up at the end of the event. Participants are urged to bring their own towels and wear sunglasses.
Trunk or Treat will start approximately at 10 a.m. behind Town Hall between King and York streets.
The Spooktacular committee is looking for churches and organizations to decorate their vehicles and participate. There is no charge. Participants are asked to enter from King Street by 8:30 a.m. Decorations of the vehicles need to be completed by 10 a.m.
Reservations for Trunk Or Treat should be made by Oct. 18. Space is limited to availability. To register call or text Gwen at 757-407-8267. Provide the organization or church name, contact person and phone number.
To sign up to run in the 10th annual Bertie Spooktacular 5K or 1-Mile ColorRun/Walk visit www.runtheeast.com or mail the entry form and payment to Bertie Spooktacular 5K, Attn: Virg Siefker, PO Box 895, Windsor, NC 27983.
The entry form can be found on the Spooktacular’s Facebook page, website site.spooktacular5k.com or by asking any of the volunteers for the race.
Both the race and jamboree will be located behind Windsor Town Hall between King and York streets.
The jamboree will feature music, food, crafts, carriage rides and a costume contest for both adults and children.
The Bertie Spooktacular 5K Presented by Perdue Farms is a charity event to benefit the Good Shepherd Food Pantry of Bertie County, NC, Inc. Food security remains a problem in Bertie County. The Good Shepherd Food Pantry works to relieve hunger, increase self-reliance and improve the quality of life for individuals, families and children in Bertie County.
The pantry services an average of 468 families per month. These households averaged a total of 923 individuals each month. This total includes approximately 179 children under the age of 18 and 258 seniors over the age of 65. For 2018 the average cost of food distribution was approximately $4,000 per month. The money raised by the Spooktacular is used to purchase food for residents in Bertie County who are less fortunate.
