Student food pantry set to open Aug. 30 - Central Michigan Life

The Central Michigan University Student Food Pantry will open for distribution 2-4 p.m. Aug. 30. Located between Robinson and Calkins Hall, the pantry provides food for all enrolled students.

Normal hours will begin next week, with the pantry open every week 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, 3-5 p.m. Wednesday and 12-2 p.m. Friday.

The food pantry was created last fall through the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center as an effort to battle food insecurity on campus. It provides a range of food including cereal, snacks, pasta, dairy products, frozen meat, fresh produce and canned soups, fruits, and vegetables.

“I hope the food pantry will act as a resource for students in need of food assistance,” said Kourtney Koch, graduate assistant for the food pantry. “I hope it will help students to be more successful inside and outside of the classroom.”

Last year the pantry served more than 200 students in approximately 600 visits. Koch hopes to reach a 1,000 students this year.

According to a report by researchers at Temple University in conjunction with the Wisconsin HOPE Lab, approximately 36 percent of college students experience food insecurity.
