BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — The CHOW Mobile Food Pantry stopped by Binghamton’s west side Monday morning to offer affordable groceries to residents with little or no access to nearby grocery stores.
It’s part of a collaboration between the Broome County Department of Social Services and the Broome County Council of Churches, meant to serve those who may not have access to affordable grocery stores.
While the CHOW Mobile Pantry already stops by various other locations with the same issue, officials hope to make this a normal stop on the pantry’s schedule.
“The CHOW bus is a great tool to have in the community because they bring food right to the people, and you’ve got to go to places where there’s a lot of people. The Department of Social Services has got a thousand people coming in a month, a lot of people coming in on Mondays. So a lot of people are going to be getting on this bus,” said Broome County Executive Jason Garnar.
Officials also note that access to affordable healthy food is important for the community’s youth.
“Food insecurity is definitely a concern in our community. Our wages are fairly low, and so children in the households certainly anyway folks can get a little bit of assistance, that’s helpful,” added Deputy Commissioner of Assistance Programs Sonja Bennett.
