CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WKBW) - Saturday is the busiest day of the year for the Cheektowaga Emergency Food Shelter. That’s welcome news for Janet Nieman.
Her pantry off of Ellwood Place is so busy because Saturday is the Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. All the food in her Cheektowaga neighborhood is going to Nieman’s house, which is also the food pantry that's she's run for decades.
“It's just so vital,” said Nieman.
The 30th year of operating a food pantry out of her house, has been a difficult one.
“It's been an interesting year,” said Nieman.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer. But, even with the doctor visits she still keeps her door open.
“We saw no interruption of service to the community,” added Nieman.
Nieman is beginning to feel better, but says she and her volunteer's work never ends.
