MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Northern Michigan University is starting a program to give back to its campus community this semester. After surveying students, faculty and staff, the NMU student government found that about 40 percent of people on campus need some sort of food assistance, and that’s how the NMU food pantry began.

The soft opening was held on Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. Right now, it is open one day a week using a “take what you need” policy. The food pantry is all non-perishable foods, and health and hygiene products as well.

Any NMU student, faculty or staff member is able to use the pantry and all you have to do is fill out some paperwork.

The grand opening will be during the winter semester.

“There’s a lot of people on campus, both faculty, staff and students, that may be in some need of food support because they can't fully support the cost of food, and we wanted to help those individuals make sure at the end of the day they got some food in their stomach,” said Connor Loftus, NMU Student Government Vice President.

If you would like to donate to the NMU food pantry, you can drop off goods at drop boxes around campus on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 28, or you can donate money to the NMU Foundation’s food pantry account.
