SPRINGFIELD — A new once-a-month low-income food pantry has opened in Springfield’s Thurston neighborhood.

Catholic Community Services of Lane County, FOOD for Lane County and volunteers joined forces to open the pantry at Waypoint Church, 332 N. 58th St. in Springfield. The pantry, across from Thurston High School, will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of each month — which includes this Saturday.

“It’s a place where people come and get free groceries,” Catholic Community Services Executive Director Tom Mulhern said.

Food pantry volunteers determine if someone is eligible by comparing their income to the poverty level and how many people live in their home.

The Catholic Church’s charitable arm in Lane County oversees the food pantry operation and volunteer training; Food for Lane County supplies the food; and volunteers from the Thurston area distribute the groceries.

“It’s just a matter of trying to make it more convenient for people to have access to food,” Mulhern said.

Catholic Community Services of Lane County already has a food pantry open three days a week at 1025 G St. in downtown Springfield. The new Thurston pantry will offer a variety of foods, but not dairy products.

The organization also delivers food boxes to Eugene and Springfield homes for housebound people. Call 541-345-3628 ext. 338 for more information.
