Today is a big day for a Texoma Food Pantry. Deron Molen joins us with the latest on the "helping hands" that are building a new legacy here in Texoma.
They've already broken ground here at the Floral Heights Community Food Pantry and over the next few days the food bank is going to be getting some new digs thanks to helping hands.
Helping hands is a partnership between Mueller, Inc. and Texas Country Reporter that donates metal buildings to area non-profits. The Floral Heights Community Food Pantry opens their doors Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday serving as many as 150 people a day.
The Floral Heights Community Food Pantry (FHCFP) began as "The Floral Heights Food Pantry" in 1979 when the Floral Heights United Methodist Church served as a Red Cross Disaster Center after the massive tornado on April 10th. It then became clear that our community needed help with food on an on-going basis.
They became the Floral Heights Community Food Pantry in 2015 when they received 501(C)3 status in August of 2015. The FHCFP is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30-11:00 and serves about 3,000 individuals each month. Bags of groceries are handed out and fresh produce is given out on Tuesdays. Clients can use our services once every 30 days and they are signing up an average of 216 new clients each month.
The project is to build a new building for the Floral Heights Community Food Pantry. It all began when Floral Heights UMC deeded the land on Tyler Street to the FHCFP. We they applied for the "Helping Hands" project, which is an award given by Mueller, Inc. in conjunction with Texas Country Reporter.
This award is a metal building which is installed by the executives of Mueller Inc. They were contacted in June letting them know that they were the 8th recipients of this award. The 4,000 square foot building will be erected between October 3rd and October 6th. The Texas Country Reporter will be filming all of the activity and the show will air on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
