Annual Spinathon supports food pantry, soup kitchen - Eagle-Tribune

DERRY — Stationary cycle fans will once again put a big spin on a fight against hunger.

The fourth annual "To Give Good" Spinathon to support hunger will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Zoo Health Club, 35 Manchester Road.

Money raised in the annual cycling benefit will support the Sonshine Soup Kitchen and the First Baptist Church Food Pantry in Derry.

The event brings people together to commit to riding a stationary bike to raise money for the two food charities in town.

Each rider will be assigned to ride for a particular charity and will bring in pledges to support the ride.

There will be 22 bikes available to ride during the Spinathon.

The brainchild of Town Councilor Joshua Bourdon, the Spinathon is a way to bring people together to support Sonshine and the food pantry, both in great need this time of year, both financially and with donations.

Bourdon said past events have raised about $10,000 to support both food missions that feed those in need.

"It's important to me that families in Derry get the help they need," Bourdon said. "Hundreds of families go hungry every month. We currently have approximately 26 children who are homeless. This is unacceptable to me and rather than complain, I choose to help, create awareness and give back."

Sonshine Soup Kitchen at First Baptist Church feeds dozens of people on a daily basis. The soup kitchen is planning to expand and will soon move its operation nearby to a new home at 6 Crystal Avenue, a former home of Fred Fuller Oil and a pizza restaurant.

The food pantry is also always in need of donations, with many schools, scouting group, organizations and churches in the area bringing seasonal and regular donations to the pantry, but the need is ongoing, pantry officials said at last year's Spinathon.

Anyone interested in signing up to ride in the Spinathon or needing information can contact Bourdon at 998-2433 or email to jrbourdon@gmail.com.
